PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY:
Taking care of a child's primary, or baby, teeth is very important. These teeth help a child chew and speak. They also are placeholders for the permanent teeth that are developing. You should begin brushing your child's teeth with a little water as soon as the first tooth appears. The American Dental Association recommends taking a child to the dentist as soon as her or his first tooth appears, but no later than the first birthday. Dr. Patel will check for any problems and demonstrate how to properly clean the child's teeth.

TREATMENT OF TOOTH DECAY :
Tooth decay is the destruction of the tooth enamel. Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, constantly forms on your teeth. When you eat or drink foods that contain carbohydrates, the bacteria produce acids that attack the tooth enamel. This causes a cavity to form.

Although cavities are a problem for children, they can also cause problems for adults. As people get older, their gums start to recede, exposing tooth roots to plaque. Also, prior fillings in teeth can start to weaken, allowing bacteria to accumulate, leading to decay.

Dr. Patel uses the latest in cavity detection. The Diagnodent is a small pen-like laser instrument that is placed on each tooth to detect decay underneath a seemingly intact tooth. The Diagnodent is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that is proven to be over 90% accurate in detecting carious lesions (cavities) over conventional methods.

SEALANTS:
Our back teeth, premolars and molars, naturally have pits and grooves in their chewing surfaces. These pits can trap food particles that aren't easily removed by brushing. Dr. Patel can apply a plastic sealant that protects these areas by keeping out plaque and food.

First the teeth are cleaned. The sealant is then painted onto the tooth enamel where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. Sealants usually last for several years before they need replacing. As children's permanent teeth come in, Dr. Patel can protect them by applying sealants.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE:
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a condition that affects 80% of American adults at some point in their lives. Periodontal disease refers to any condition affecting the gums and bone that support your teeth. It usually begins with the build up of a clear, slimy film, called plaque, containing harmful bacteria. Untreated plaque and build up of tartar can lead to infection that attacks your gums and works its way into the bones beneath.

ROOT CANALS:
The words root canal has a mysterious way of inducing images pain and fear. The root canal actually is not something that should be dreaded; rather is a procedure that relieves pain and allows you to keep your original teeth. Before root canal therapy, the only way to treat the diseased nerve tissue and pulp was removing the tooth.

Root canals are needed when the pulp chamber inside the tooth becomes infected and/or dies. Inside the pulp chamber is a collection of nutrients and nerves that maintains the health of the tooth. The chamber divides at the base of the tooth to anywhere from one to four root canals. This tissue can become diseased as a result of a deep cavity or even a slight crack in the tooth which allows bacteria too seep into the chamber. If left untreated, the dying pulp can damage the tooth as well as the jawbone.

Most people who need root canals come into the office with a severe toothache. The following are other symptoms of infected or dead pulp:

  • Pain and swelling in the tooth or around the tooth
  • Sensitivity or hot or cold foods
  • Discoloration of teeth
  • Swelling & tenderness in gums tissue and lymph nodes

To treat and save your tooth, a root canal is performed over the course of 1-3 visits. In your first visit, an anesthetic is given so that you may feel comfortable during the procedure. An opening is then made in the crown of the tooth that allows Dr. Patel to access the pulp chamber. The infected pulp is removed, and the canals and chamber are cleaned and shaped. The empty chamber and root canals are filled with medications to prevent infections and destroy and remaining bacteria. A temporary filling is placed and the medicine is allowed a few days to do its job. In addition to the medication placed in the tooth at your visit, Dr. Patel may prescribe you some medication to ensure that all the bacteria are killed. On your second visit, the temporary filling is removed and the root canals and pulp chamber is filled and sealed. A post and crown may be recommended when the root canal therapy is completed. The crown is then restored and the procedure is complete.

After the treatment the tooth and surrounding area may be feel sensitive. Over-the-counter drugs should help, if your pain is more severe, Dr. Patel can write you a prescription for something that will help your pain. After several days you should be back to normal.

After the procedure, it will be your responsibility to maintain the health of your teeth and gums with regular brushing, flossing and visits to Dr. Patel.
